  • Got any loose change? Don’t overthink it. At least, that’s what McDonald’s Loose Change
campaign represents, according to Sydney-based photographer Garry Owens. “The idea
was terrific and as soon as I saw the layouts, I wanted to do them.” The images were shot at
Brighton Beach and Queens Wharf in Newcastle, north of Sydney, and a community hall
in Western Sydney. And the almost empty skyline and grading was reflective of an earlier
project Owens did in Tokyo. “On this project, we kept everything simple and there was no
comping. In fact, is was probably one of the most straightforward jobs I’ve done for a long
while,” Owens admits.

  • “It’s a great reminder of how little is needed for an idea to work.” But
that didn’t necessarily mean it wasn’t eye-catching to the locals, as Owens found out when
the team set up the arcade machine for his second shot. “Kids kept trying to put money in
there to win a bear, but suffice to say we disappointed quite a few kids that day as the
machine was not operational.”
