MATTY SMITH

WINNER

Matty Smith emigrated from the United Kingdom to Australia in 2007. He is fascinated by the ocean, diving and ocean sports, and in recent years has focused on underwater, natural history subjects. The half-over, half-underwater image is fast becoming Smith’s signature image, which he uses to convey the majestic feeling of diving in a picture format, marrying a wet and unfamiliar world with a dry and more familiar one.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

“A strong portfolio should be representative of a photographer’s style, pulled together as a collection using consistency, quality and interesting subjects. Duplication of similar images or moments in a portfolio is a common mistake where self-editing has let the package down. A photographer should be able to decide on their best image, instead of offering the viewer this role.”

“Photographers that went beyond the literal documentation of a single event stood out. Level of difficulty in approach and subject matter was a factor, but distance travelled was not. I was drawn to many of the simpler photographs from everyday life. In the end, what the photographer brought to the situation was the determining factor.”
