MARCELO CANIZARES

WINNER

Sydney-based Marcelo Canizares is an established graphic artist with over eight years’ experience. It was a deep admiration for the ability to craft an image, not merely capture a moment in time, that led him to pursue photography in 2012. He now looks to combine his graphic arts background with his photographic skills, to further propel his artistic endeavours in the realms of commercial arts and advertising.

JUDGES’ COMMENTS

“I felt that in much of the work the talent was disconnected from their environment; they just didn’t feel part of the scene in many instances.”

“It’s good to have variety in the work, but it still helps enormously if it’s connected at some level, either through style, grading, approach or subject.”

“Some work bordered on ‘wooden’. It’s fine to get everything technically, but don’t forget about the ‘performance’ of the talent. It’s the photographer’s job to extract that.”

“There was often a lack of subtlety in the lighting of many images. More attention needs to be paid to the light hitting the background elements. This is what makes the difference between good amateurs and professionals.”
