Veil exhibition by Aldona Kmiec

Red Veil. Image Aldona Kmiec.

Kmiec's "Veil" series is contemplative and meditative. Through laboriously repeated physical movements, Kmiec creates striking long-exposure photographs layered with vibrant compositions of colour. These colours are not chosen at random; they are deeply connected to her Polish roots, emotions, and historical Polish cultural motifs, such as the Warsaw Nike monument, symbolising victory in Greek mythology

Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Kmiec's works in the "Veil" series explore profound themes of identity, migration, and the quest for belonging. Having moved to the UK in 2004, and then to Australia in 2009, Kmiec uses her art to navigate and articulate the complex emotions tied to this experience. "Veil" provides a broader narrative and context for dialogue around migration, the concept of 'fitting in,' and the intricate dynamics of cultural identity.
