Thin Air by Robert Ashton

Almost one year on from his incredibly successful exhibition, Into the Hollow Mountains, (mid. 1970's Fitzroy, Victoria), Robert Ashton returns to CF Gallery with a new series of photographic work. These landscapes were taken in 2013 in Ladakh, an arid mountainous plateau in the far north of India, bordering on Pakistan, China and Tibet. Since the partition of India, in 1947, it has become a very sensitive region politically for both India and Pakistan, and the landscape bears the marks of war. The region has an altitude of around 3,500 metres above sea level and as a consequence the air is thin and crystal clear. "I was drawn to the barren beauty and the exquisite light of the landscape and the way it absorbed the scattered mementos of war," Ashton says.
