To celebrate the opening of the Leica Store & Gallery Melbourne, a Leica Akademie Open Day with four free workshop sessions will be on offer. It’s an opportunity to sample the Leica Akademie offering, to discover and develop a new style of photography, and meet the team at Leica Akademie Australia in the new in-store studio.

SHOOT MELBOURNE'S ICONIC LANEWAYS WITH JESSE MARLOW

9am – 11.30am

Jesse has been shooting the Melbourne streets and laneways for more than 20 years. Over this period he has developed a keen sense for capturing unusual moments that may otherwise go unnoticed.

Learn:
• How to identify interesting and quirky images.
• Tips on how to overcome potential fears of shooting in public, body language and expectations.
• Refine your craft and boost your confidence on the street.

STUDIO PORTRAITURE: MARK STRACHAN

10am – 12pm

A lover of available light photography, Mark Strachan will be showing how he works when the sun goes down, using simple studio lighting techniques to make his portraits. In this brief demonstration with a professional model, you’ll learn how you can achieve stunning results with a minimum of equipment.

FROM SKETCH TO BILLBOARD: DARREN CENTOFANTI

1pm – 3pm

With 25 years’ experience as a fashion and glamour photographer, Darren is known for creating images that are colourful, eye-catching, creative, and sexy. His work has seen him travel the globe on assignment for various publications and clients. At this workshop, Darren will reveal his method of making original images, using sketches to conceptualise creative ideas. Darren will also demonstrate how easy it can be to follow a self-made brief and achieve your creative ideas.

• How to sketch-up a concept and then execute it on-set
• Unique lighting styles

CAPTURING THE WORLD: NICK RAINS

3:30pm – 5pm

Forever on-the-move, Nick has be capturing the world for more than 33 years. He is also the Principal Instructor of Leica Akademie Australia. At this workshop, Nick will share his methods of travel and documentary photography with particular emphasis on the thought processes and in-the-field techniques of creating fine images of people and places. This not a technical seminar, instead, expect interesting and robust discussion about what works (and what does not), especially when you have little or no control over the situation or your subjects.

• What camera equipment works the best in the field
• How to create strong travel photos
• How to ‘stage’ spontaneous images
