American Dream by Rita Zimmermann
Rita Zimmermann’s first Australian exhibition, American Dream, will be on show from 8 September to 27 September at Black Eye Gallery, Sydney. Polish-born, Zimmermann has always worked with a variety of mediums including photography, video, installation and performance. While her use of media is diverse, there is one underlying structural principle found in all of her work - collage.
Recycling images from her fashion photography, Zimmermann incorporates pieces from vintage books and magazines found in flea markets all over the world, creating a multi-layered visual experience. The images disturb our sense of reality and confuse our preconceived notions of popular culture. Having always felt she was of a surrealist mind, and being influenced by the likes of Picasso, Dali and Buñuel, Zimmermann’s work intermingles aspects of surrealism, dada and pop art to relay a bizarre visual narrative that touches on ideas about American standards, silicon deformation, Hollywood, fast food and the supersize craze.
