Sean Izzard - Clean Up Australia 1 of 3

Sean Izzard - Clean Up Australia Day

When we see campaigns for Clean Up Australia Day, we are usually flooded with images of garbage mounds and waste trails. This campaign takes a different tact, focusing on the result of the clean-up, and the regeneration of nature. “We did some initial research and testing on what shapes would work best, be most recognisable, real in the littered world, and graphic,” explains photographer, Sean Izzard.

Once the shape was decided, Izzard scouted for each location and used his technical skills to ensure consistency among the different landscapes. “The mangroves [image] was shot out at Kurnell, NSW, burying the bottle in the mud, cutting the natural light, and lighting with flash to keep it consistent,” says Izzard.

The beach scene was also shot out on location during low-tide, however some creative thinking was required to produce a desert scene. “We didn’t have the means to travel, so I acquired some red dirt from a baseball field, embedded a bottle at the studio, and combined it with a red dirt plate that was shot at the same baseball field.” This desert scene required the most piecing together in post production, while the other images were predominately done in camera. “The sapling, crab and desert flower elements were all added in post,” adds Izzard.
