Janyon Boshoff – Pop & Spritz 1 of 3

Janyon Boshoff - Pop & Spritz

The Pop & Spritz campaign for Jacob's Creek Prosecco Spritz was by no means your standard advertising brief. Conceived with the guidance of AnalogFolk, featuring photography by Janyon Boshoff, and extensive digital and post production including live action, 3D, VFX, and retouching by Limehouse Creative in Sydney, the final outcome relied on a large team of over 20, including DOP, directors, producers, animators, creatives, and a variety of support staff.

Certainly a sign of things to come, the integrated approach taken by Jacob’s Creek is something we can expect to see a great deal more of in the future. “What made this particular project so challenging was that each element was technical: slow-motion, liquid, video, photography, and CGI assets all combined,” says Duncan Harriss, director of production company, Limehouse Creative.

In order to streamline both cost and time, the decision was made to shoot motion and photography on the same day. Two crews, one for the motion and one for the stills, sharing a large studio and stylist, and bringing together their specific experience and skills, meant that everything had to operate like clockwork. “It’s an approach we’ve taken before,” Harriss says, “and it proves to be particularly effective for integrated campaigns like this one. Boshoff was responsible for capturing the bottle, glasses, and elements of the liquid, while the writing was predominantly CGI. “Shooting everything photographically assured an expert eye for detail and lighting of the scene and gave us both high quality assets, but also reference for re-creating in live action and in CG,” Harriss says.

3D work features prominently in large parts both for the print and the video. Harriss said that although everything could have been executed in 3D, the best result came with a combination of real footage, photographic elements for the print, live action shot on a Phantom Flex4K, and CGI. The brief for Limehouse was to produce assets that were fun and realistic with dynamic and hyper-real liquid lettering animated for video in HD and print. Fundamental to this, and as a result of the integrated approach, was the need for the print and the various 5s and 10s motion pieces to be consistent in look and feel as well as work beautifully on each of the formats: HD video and 10K for print, including POS and outdoor billboard.

Harriss described the project as a “true collaboration. At Limehouse we represent neither photographers, nor directors. Nor have these in-house,” he says. “This is about collaborating with the best skills in the industry, and the best for the brief using all mediums at hand.”
