Michael Wayne Plant is a social documentary photographer who produces long-form projects examining public life within contemporary capitalism.
Born in New Zealand, he has lived and worked across Australia, Greece, the United States, Italy, France and the United Kingdom. This international perspective deeply informs his understanding of social space, economic structures and everyday urban life.
He holds an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures from Goldsmiths, University of London, where his practice consolidated around the visualisation of the social landscape.
Drawing on street and documentary traditions, he relies on sustained observation to construct thorough visual narratives over time rather than isolated frames, supported by an earlier background in advertising, fashion, portraiture and architecture that informs his approach to sequencing and visual clarity.
Alongside his documentary practice, Michael brings extensive experience in arts education and digital imaging systems. Between 2009 and 2018 he held senior teaching roles in London, notably as Lead Photography Lecturer at Idea Store Learning in Tower Hamlets – where he oversaw roughly 70 courses annually spanning short workshops to year-long diplomas – with further teaching appointments at Working Men’s College and Morley College.
Today, he conducts select workshops centred on documentary methodologies and photographic editing. He also serves as a Global Product Specialist for DxO, focusing on RAW processing workflows, image integrity and professional practice.
A former Sony Global Imaging Ambassador and Imaging Advocate (2009–2017), his work has also received support from Epson, OnOne, Blurb and X-Rite. He welcomes enquiries regarding documentary collaborations, publications, speaking engagements, workshops, and digital post-production consulting via his contact page.
Michael is also a Judge for The Capture Awards 2026.
