STUART BELL, THE CHASE (ANIMALS 2026)
The Rocky Mountain Ewes experience an oestrus cycle that lasts approximately 28 days. Within this cycle, there is a brief receptive phase of about 48 hours, which is the critical time for mating. During this short window, the Rocky Mountain Big Horn Rams must be vigilant and active, as they pursue the ewes with determination to ensure the continuation of their lineage. The mature rams, easily identified by their impressive full curl horns, dominate the chase. These older rams aggressively track and harass the ewes, constantly testing their receptiveness. They also bully the younger rams with smaller horns, pushing them aside to secure their position. However, the youthful rams do not give up easily; despite being sidelined, they often attempt to sneak in and mate with the ewes when the opportunity arises.
