Sheila Peake, Sossusvlei: a foray into scale and colour. (LANDSCAPE 2025)

Namibia, a land of extreme beauty and diverse landscapes. Photographing in this country is a “time stands still” experience. The vastness was over whelming and the colour palette a visual overload. The blues of the sky, the red sand of the Sossusvlei desert and the white dusty Namib Desert all added to the feeling of being such a tiny part of a vast landscape. Trying to portray the scale and colour of this place was difficult. Encountering an early morning balloon tour allowed context to the scale and colour of the desert region. A second opportunity presented itself when I watched people climb Big Daddy sand dune. The size to scale ratio seemed to perfectly fit my perception of how to show the vastness. The ever-changing colours of the sand and sky produced dramatic variations in each photograph.
