Geoff Treagus, Loss, Grief, & Recovery, part 1 (PEOPLE 2025)

The first of two entries, taken from a larger series. I wanted to create a narrative that is relatable, and which, hopefully, will have a good number of the viewers really feel something. Grief affects us all differently. Often there's a process or a series of stages one goes through; sometimes intense, sometimes introvertive, and sometimes the company of others can help. Grief, loss, and hopefully, recovery is a big part of the lives of the vast majority of people, not matter where we come from, or what our position in the world is. There can be grit or messiness involved, emotional emptiness or 'dullness' or shock, or alternatively an overwhelming amount of feelings that are hard to fathom. But there can also be support and help at hand, which can bring out the best in people, and can be an important tool to use towards healing. For these photos I used a Canon M6 camera, with a 50mm lens. I tried both automatic and manual modes to get the look I was after. The charcoal used was from the fire pit of a house I used to live at, and whilst there, both celebrations of life, and great experiences of loss were part of that place's story. Two of the three models involved in the greater 'Loss, Grief, and Recovery' series experienced many of these moments with me.
