Jannico Kelk, Life In The Red (ANIMAL 2021)

Australia has the highest rate of mammal extinction in the world. Currently, our arid zones are a shell of their former glory, primarily due to feral cats and foxes. Two hundred years ago, our beautiful red deserts were full of unique mammals, which are largely unknown to the general public. They're now restricted to a handful of fenced reserves, remote refuges and islands. These small and carefully managed refuges act as a window that allow us peer in the past. The Boodie (Bettongia lesueur), Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) and Chuditch (Dasyurus geoffroii) have had significant conservation programs dedicated to their survival in the arid lands, essentially bringing them out of the red and one step away from extinction.
