Fiona Birt, Journeys (BLACK & WHITE 2022)

People are constantly on the go; many hours of our lives are spent moving from one location to another and we all have stories to tell. One of the world’s most popular modes of transport is the train. But is our time spent on trains ever wasted? For some, it can mean hours of our lives whittled away whilst we sit in boredom, willing our stop to be ever closer. For others, this is a treasured time of solitude and contemplation; time to stop and reminisce about our pasts, the people in our lives, or to fantasize about what is awaiting us at the end of our journey. Some treat this time as a luxury; a time to catch up on sleep, or to relax and enjoy simple pleasures such as reading or listening to music. Some travel with a friend and enjoy the extended time to catch up. Others enjoy gazing out at the scenery, lost in their own private worlds, and some love to people-watch and try and figure out other people’s stories.
