Mridula Amin, Inferno (Doco/Photojournalism (2018))

An osage saying goes "when the last tree is cut down, the last fish eaten and the last stream poisoned, you will realise that you cannot eat money." Jharia, a town in the Indian state of Jharkrand has been on fire for a century as a result of open cut coal mining. It closely resembles Dante's Inferno - homes collapsing into the fires beneath, scavengers and plumes of lethal gas. At night, it glows an eerie orange. Our decisions have led to startling results but perhaps it is human nature to be limitless. Coal India seeks to output 1 billion tonnes of coal by 2019. This is an exploration into what the end of time looks like.
