Fiona Bowring, In the hands of the artists: Warlukurlangu Arts (DOCO 2026)

Warlukurlangu Artists is one of the longest running and most successful Aboriginal-owned art centres in Central Australia. It’s based in Yuendumu, 290km northwest from Alice Springs on the Tanami Road. Yuendumu is a large Aboriginal community: the population fluctuates between 700 and 1000 people and it comprises families from similar language groups with strong cohesive traditional culture. In 2023 I spent 10 days volunteering at the arts centre, priming canvases, washes brushes, making tea and toasties and in my downtime, watching the artists at work. Featured artists are Featured artists are Vanetta Nampijinpa Hudson, Flora Nakamarra Brown and the late Jeanie Napangardi Lewis.
