Samara Sutton-Baker, Idyll | Idle (ART 2025)

As Australia teeters on the precipice of economic uncertainty, Idyll | Idle presents middle-class suburbia as a relic of a bygone era. Built landscapes, reminiscent of the hollow optimism propagated by post-war America, are reviewed for their verity as the pictorial space gives way to digital interventions. Familiar scenes of serial sequence, order and structure are subjected to distortions which upend their stability; suburban aspiration and its contemporary resonance is questioned against the backdrop of a national housing crisis.
