Leanne Averill, Iconic Melbourne (ART 2026)
I am interested in acknowledging that none of us see things in exactly the same way, even something that we are witnessing at the same time. We see from slightly different angles, from varying perspectives and from within our own assumptions. In blending multiple images together I am aiming to create a complexity that incorporates this nuance and builds a scene that has never actually been. Essentially each artwork is a photograph made up of photographs. This series of images presents three iconic Melbourne landmarks - the Collins Street tram, Luna Park and China Town. Each artwork was created using the same post-production technique. They are made up of at least 20 photos of varying opacities, merged together to create a painterly image. This photographic technique brings into being a scene that has never actually existed. I seek to create images that are impressionistic in nature and make the viewer question if they are seeing a photograph or a painting. I invite them to delve into the essence rather than the detail of the scene.
