Stefan Eberhard, Growling Swallet, Mount Field National Park, Tasmania (LANDSCAPE 2026)
A ‘swallet’ is an English term for an underground stream or a place where a stream descends underground, typically a cave entrance in limestone country. Compare with swallow hole. The ‘growling’ connotes the ominous noise which echoes from the depths of this cave when the stream is flowing strongly. Inside the cave during winter and spring floods the reverberating roar of the crashing waterfalls is deafening and unnerving!
