Greg J Boerma, Feeling Thoughts (Portrait 2020)

Lodged are 3 images that deal with the journey of three individuals. As individuals they are experiencing the following from image 1 to image 3: darkened deep ‘feeling thoughts’, fuzzy and faded ‘feeling thoughts’, and enlightened, energized ‘feeling thoughts’. There are 3 moments in time that define our perceptions and attitudes in that moment. This is the journey we all travel as we muse around our purpose and making of meaning in our lives. This is especially the case after a major loss in our lives. Stage 1 and Image 1: Initially our head is downcast, as we look deep within ourselves to ponder the very rudimentary needs and desires in the reality of change. Nothing ever stays the same. Hence, the image has a darkened surround that mimics our insulated perceptions with a flare of light on the beard signifying a willingness to engage however, still not quite understanding. Stage 2 and Image 2: This stage sees us looking outwardly with our deep thoughts to see and experience others. Our countenance is pensive with eyes exploring. We may imitate others, such as holding onto our glass of alcohol. This is a period of uncertainty, of fuzziness as we gather information to help us see our direction. Here I have chosen to include an image that has graininess to reflect the fuzziness of good feelings with some uncertainty as one processes the information before them, as they wonder their future. It can be comforting to be with others and at the same time they are not walking in your shoes. Stage 3 and Image 3: This is where the person feels enlightened as they have come to realize, accept and embrace their journey. They look up to the new opportunities and possibilities with a peaceful and joyful expression. They have revitalized energy within their being. The image is somewhat lighter and, with distinct outlines. Fuzziness no longer exists. As with the tree, they will regrow as a result of the fires journey. It is through the chaos of life that we learn the greatest lessons, not in the easy times. The three individual’s journey’s meld into a similar experiential journey that must be travelled. They may have different needs; however, the principles are the same, the process is the same, and there is hope. For me as a counsellor, facilitator, and volunteer with Bears of Hope Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support and using photography as one of the tools supporting these bereaved parents, it is an important realization for me in understanding the journey of bereaved parents. This also applies to all those that have loss in their lives.
