Heather Smith, Between Sand and Surf (SINGLE SHOT 2026)

I was at Bells Beach during practice day for the pro surf competition, photographing friends. A young surfer waited politely while I finished, then headed down the stairs to the beach. Nice kid. When I looked down shortly after, this is what I saw. One person, one board, a trail of footprints dividing the chaos of breaking waves from untouched sand. My camera was packed away, so I grabbed my phone. These moments don't wait. I don't know what it feels like to walk toward competition as a surfer, but that solitary walk toward whatever comes next felt universal. The quiet before. The footprints behind as proof of the journey.
