John Luff, Balancing Act (ANIMALS 2026)

At our place, we let the grass grow to please the local wildlife, like these pale-headed rosellas (Platycercus adscitus). In these three consecutive images, I watched one of a pair of rosellas inch further and further along the branch of an avocado tree, trying to get closer to the most delicious grass seeds. In the second image, it had to spread its wings to avoid losing its balance, like a tightrope walker using a balancing pole. Finally, watched on by its mate, it achieved its goal and confirmed that the grass is always greener on the other side. [Text and images © JL Images]
