Jenni Eakins, As the Water Whispers Back (LANDSCAPE 2026)

This lake is on the road into Milford Sound on Te Waipounamu (South Island) of Aotearoa (New Zealand). If you lean in close to this extraordinary place you can almost hear it—an ancient sigh being carried across the water along with murmurings of forgotten dawns and secret words whispered through the trees. This place doesn’t simply reflect the world; it speaks to it, unfolding memories in soft echoes that rise and fade with the passing of time. As we stood for a moment at the edge of this place and let the hush wash over us, we closed our eyes and heard the assertion. It was a voice not quite human, not quite wind or wave, but something older—the gentle insistence that nothing is ever lost, so long as we pause to listen. Time here softens at the edges—moments linger longer, the mist offers hints, and the slow awakening of the dawning day feels like a secret ceremony, ancient and ongoing. For an instant, you recognize yourself in the stillness: just another whisper in the long conversation between water, sky and land, honouring the past while being present in the now.
