Will Lawler, Adelie of Antarctica (ANIMAL 2023)

Adélie penguins, like all penguins are colony animals. Here I have focussed on a lone subject and removed all background information to highlight its personality, character and individualism. In doing so I've also attempted to bring attention to its stark features that seem to contrast so beautifully to its icy world. I have chosen images that are very similar, yet poignantly different in this portfolio - again to highlight the character. Photographed from a moving zodiac boat at 1/1000 sec and looking up to a snow covered cliff on Detaille Island, South of the Antarctic Circle. This Adelie seemed to be engaging and chattering directly with the photographer, waving its flippers and snapping its beak as if to say "how dare you disturb me on this fine morning". These portfolio images should be viewed together as numbered 1 through 3 (L to R).
