Noel Manikkam, A Behaviour very rarely seen: The Flehmen Response (ANIMAL 2025)

A Behaviour very rarely seen: The Flehmen Response Image 1: With a delicate sniff and curling of the upper lip, a male giraffe deciphers the pheromones in the urine of a female and perceives that she is ready to mate. Image 2 captures the male being aroused and attempting to mate but the female darts off indicating that timing and consent are crucial. In image 3, an elder giraffe intervenes, asserting social hierarchy and maintaining order within the group. The male appears bashful. This rare moment illustrates the complex social dynamics often overlooked in these gentle giants.
