Sony launches lightweight 300mm f/2.8 GM OSS lens

Sony has announced the FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS lens.

The lens weighs a measly 1470g, making it the world’s lightest large aperture telephoto prime (try saying that 5 times fast!), the company says.

The new lens is 50% lighter and 43% less volume than the Sony 400mm f/2.8 GM OSS, and is the same weight as the original 70-200mm F2.8 GM. 

By comparison, the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L weighs 2,400 grams and the Nikon F 300mm f/2.8 VR weighs 2,900 grams.

The lens is constructed of 20 elements in 16 groups, and includes one extra-low dispersion element and three super extra-low dispersion elements. It has an 11-bladed aperture diaphragm and a minimum focusing distance of two metres.

The 300mm F2.8 GM OSS has two XD linear motors, along with an “optimised algorithm” to enable fast, quiet autofocus. The lens takes 40.5mm drop-in filters in a slot near the camera mount.

No local pricing has been confirmed yet, but the 300mm F2.8 will cost $5,999 USD ($9,319 AUD) in the states. 

Update - The FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS will be available in Australia from late January 2024, with an SRP of $10,499.
