Nikon unveils the ZR – the first cinema camera developed from RED partnership

Nikon has announced the ZR, a full-frame 6K camera in a new Z CINEMA series. The release marks the first major product developed since Nikon's acquisition of the high-end cinema camera manufacturer RED Digital Cinema, Inc. Interestingly, industry sources are calling it the 'baby RED'.
The compact camera is aimed at professional filmmakers and content creators, integrating core RED technologies into the Nikon Z-mount ecosystem.
At the heart of the ZR is a new video format, R3D NE, which is based on RED's proprietary R3D RAW codec. This allows for internal 12-bit RAW recording up to 6K at 60 frames per second and 4K at 120 frames per second. The camera incorporates RED's colour science and features dual native ISOs of 800 and 6400, along with a claimed dynamic range of over 15 stops.

A significant feature is the camera's audio capability, introducing 32-bit float audio recording for both external microphones and its built-in mic—a first for an interchangeable lens camera. The internal microphone system, using Nokia's OZO Audio technology, offers five selectable pickup patterns for different recording scenarios.
Despite its advanced video specifications, the ZR is the lightest (630g with battery + memory card) in the new series. It is designed for efficient heat dissipation without a cooling fan, enabling continuous 6K recording for up to 125 minutes with external power.
The camera also features a large, bright 4.0-inch, 3.07-million-dot monitor designed to reduce the need for an external display.

For workflow integration, the ZR supports Frame.io Camera to Cloud for direct wireless file transfers. It is also the first Nikon camera to incorporate a digital accessory shoe, allowing for power and two-way communication with compatible accessories.
The ZR inherits autofocus technology from Nikon's flagship Z9, using deep learning to detect and track nine subject types. It also includes 5-axis in-body image stabilisation and still photography features – utilising the 24.5MP sensor from the recent Z6III.
The ZR camera is available for pre-order with a RRP of $3,499 for body only.
