Nikon has announced the NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S, a new professional telephoto zoom designed for sports, action, and wildlife photographers shooting on the full-frame Z-mount system.

Billed by Nikon as the first interchangeable zoom lens to feature both a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture and a built-in 1.4X teleconverter, the lens allows shooters to instantly switch from a 120–300mm focal range to 420mm at f/4 without needing to change lenses.

Despite the internal teleconverter, the new Z-mount iteration weighs 2,735g – shedding 515g compared to its F-mount predecessor, the AF-S NIKKOR 120-300mm f/2.8E FL ED SR VR, which was released in 2020.

To handle fast-moving subjects across sports and wildlife applications, the lens uses Nikon’s Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) autofocus drive system. It also features up to 6.5 stops of vibration reduction (image stabilisation) when paired with a camera body supporting Synchro VR.

Optically, the lens integrates Nikon's Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat to suppress ghosting and flare in difficult lighting scenarios, such as stadium floodlights or strong backlighting.

Handling is supported by an internal focusing and zooming mechanism, meaning the physical barrel length remains constant during operation.

The tripod collar features an Arca-Swiss compatible quick-release design, and the barrel is constructed from magnesium alloy with extensive weather sealing for dust and moisture resistance.

The NIKKOR Z 120-300mm f/2.8 TC VR S is available now and retails for $23,699.
