Nikon has announced the Z5IIC, a full-frame mirrorless camera priced at $2,399 AUD. The Z5IIC is equipped with a backside-illumination CMOS sensor and the same EXPEED 7 image-processing engine found in Nikon’s Z5II – which is a more traditional prosumer mirrorless. In a way, the 'C' model stands for compact with an emphasis of more automated controls, though the camera can also be easily controlled in manual mode.
The camera introduces 15 scene modes to the mode dial – a first for Nikon's full-frame mirrorless lineup – which automatically adjust settings such as white balance and Picture Control for specific scenarios like night landscapes, pets, or portraits.
A dedicated button provides direct access to Imaging Recipes for applying custom image presets in-camera, and the model includes a Film Grain function for applying textured effects to photos and videos.
Autofocus and Stabilisation
The AI-powered autofocus system detects 10 subject types and introduces a new fish subject-detection mode (what !?!). Focus acquisition is rated down to -10 EV for low-light shooting. The camera features 5-axis in-body Vibration Reduction, delivering up to 7.5 stops of compensation at the centre of the frame.
Video Capabilities
The Z5IIC records 4K UHD video at up to 60 frames per second (cropped to APS-C size) and Full HD at up to 120 frames per second. It supports H.265 10-bit MOV, N-Log, and internal N-RAW recording to an SD memory card. Additional video-centric features include a front REC lamp, a red monitor frame indicator, Product Review Mode, and UVC/UAC compatibility for direct webcam use via USB.
Hardware and Shooting Performance
The dust and drip-resistant magnesium alloy body is available in black or silver and features a 3.2-inch vari-angle touchscreen. It supports continuous shooting at up to 14 frames per second, with a Pre-Release Capture function capable of recording at 30 frames per second for up to one second before the shutter is fully pressed. Data management is supported by SnapBridge and the Nikon Imaging Cloud.
The Nikon Z5IIC enters a competitive entry-level full-frame market – positioned as a direct alternative to the recently announced Canon EOS R8 Mark II.
