Nikon announces the new lighter, faster Z 70–200mm f/2.8 S II
Nikon has officially launched the NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8 VR S II in Australia, a significant update to one of the most essential lenses in any professional photographer's kit.
This second-generation Z-mount telephoto zoom brings substantial improvements in weight, autofocus speed, and handling, making it a powerhouse for sports, wildlife, and event photography.
The 'S' in this lens’s designation stands for 'super' – and it certainly lives up to the name.
Here is a breakdown of the key features and upgrades for this new flagship lens:
Industry-Leading Portability: The most striking change is the physical footprint. Nikon has managed to shed nearly 26% of the weight compared to the 2020 original. Weighing in at just 998 grams, the S II is now the lightest 70-200mm f/2.8 lens in its class.
The predecessor weighed in at 1.3kg, while the older DSLR Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR from 2003-2009 weighed in at a hefty 1.47kg.
This reduction was achieved through a total overhaul of the internal optical and mechanical layout, offering a massive benefit to handheld shooters and videographers using gimbals.
Next-Gen Autofocus Performance: The lens introduces Nikon’s Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) motor, which provides a massive leap in speed and precision. Nikon claims the autofocus is roughly 3.5 times faster than the previous model.
Additionally, AF tracking while zooming – a critical factor for sports and action – has been improved by 40%, ensuring subjects stay locked in even as the focal length changes.
On top of this, the lens reportedly focusses silently – which is great for in-camera audio recording.
Refined Optical Design: Despite the lighter build, Nikon has doubled down on image quality. By strategically using Super ED and aspherical ED elements, the lens minimises chromatic aberration and maintains the high-resolution rendering synonymous with the 'S-Line' badge.
It also features advanced Meso Amorphous and ARNEO coatings to virtually eliminate ghosting and flare in difficult lighting conditions.

Practical Workflow Features
Nikon has introduced several upgrades based on professional feedback:
Arca-Swiss Compatibility: For the first time on a NIKKOR lens, the tripod foot is directly compatible with Arca-Swiss heads, eliminating the need for extra plates.
Internal Zooming: The lens maintains a constant length during zooming, ensuring better balance and superior weather sealing.
Filter Access: A dedicated window in the lens hood allows users to rotate circular polarizers or variable ND filters without removing the hood.
Enhanced Stability: When used with compatible Z-series cameras, the Synchro VR system provides up to 6.0 stops of vibration reduction.
Close-up Performance: The lens features a minimum focus distance of just 0.38m at the wide end, offering excellent versatility for tight portraits, products or detail shots.
Pricing and Availability
The NIKKOR Z 70–200mm f/2.8 VR S II is available for pre-order now in Australia with an RRP of $5,399 AUD. Given its combination of significantly reduced weight and drastically faster AF, it is set to become the new benchmark for professional mirrorless zooms.
For those on a 'budget' – the NIKKOR Z 70-200mm f/2.8 VR S (mk I) has seen some hefty price reductions (25% off) with a street price of around $3,800.
