The original Godox AD400Pro studio flash, released in 2018, quickly became popular with photographers thanks to its portability, reliability, dual power options (battery or mains), built-in wireless control, and ample 400Ws output adjustable down to 1/256. Its compatibility with a wide range of affordable Bowens-mount modifiers added to its appeal, while a sub-$1,000 price point made it especially accessible.

Following the release of the AD600Pro II earlier this month, the new AD400Pro II represents a similar refresh. It boasts a more refined design, enhanced control options, and a new bi-colour LED modelling lamp.

Headlining the list of enhancements is the introduction of 'Freeze Mode'. This new feature boasts an incredibly short flash duration, (1/27770 second) effectively freezing motion. This allows you to 'freeze' flying water droplets or say the wings of a humming bird or insects. While the original AD400 Pro was no slouch in this department, the Freeze Mode on the Mark II offers a new level of creative control for stopping motion with tack-sharp precision.

Another significant upgrade is the redesigned modelling lamp. The AD400Pro II now features a powerful 30W bi-colour, flicker-free LED modelling lamp, offering adjustable colour temperature. This allows photographers to better match the ambient light or creatively use the modelling light for video work, a feature absent in the original's single-colour lamp. This added flexibility makes the AD400 Pro II a more versatile tool for hybrid shooters who seamlessly switch between stills and video.

In terms of usability, Godox has refined the user experience with a more intuitive interface with an upgraded colour control TFT display screen and expanded power control. The power range on the AD400Pro II has been broadened from the original 1/256 to the now 1/512, offering finer adjustments at the lower end of the power scale.

This extra control delivers the ability to shoot at high ISO's with very wide apertures on location – to balance nuanced ambient lighting. Otherwise, the standard lithium battery still allows for 460 full-power flashes per charge.

While retaining the same 400Ws power output and the reliable 2.4GHz wireless X system that made the original so popular, the AD400Pro II also sees improvements in its build quality and ergonomics. The overall design remains familiar, ensuring a smooth transition for existing Godox users, but with subtle refinements that enhance its handling and durability.

You can swap out the lithium battery for the AC400 AC power adaptor and use mains power, which is great for studio or indoor use.

Modifier wise, the light retains the same Godox mount and Bowens mount adapter in its standard kit – ensuring users have access to an incredible range of reasonably priced reflectors, softboxes, striplights, snoots and umbrellas.

The Godox AD400Pro II is available for pre-order for $1,075.
