Canon releases major firmware updates for top tier EOS R cameras

Canon this week has released significant new firmware updates for their latest flagship models – the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II. These updates aim to improve performance, functionality and security.

Additionally, earlier this month, updates were released for the 'top-tier' professional / prosumer EOS R mirrorless lineup, including the original R5, R6 mk II, R7, and R3 cameras.

Unique among camera manufacturers, Canon has implemented a six-digit PIN for password protection, which is required upon every power-on. Fortunately you can switch this off as we could imagine this could be quite annoying – especially if you are trying to catch a fleeting moment – only to be met with a password prompt screen.

Setting up your password is easy – just don't forget it...

As these cameras have 'eye focus' technology – perhaps they could have a retina scan as security in the future? Or maybe in another update, it could require a passcode only once per calendar day – as the camera already keeps the day / date stored in memory even when turned off.

While a password won't prevent your camera from being physically stolen – much like the widespread phone theft in London (over 80,000 stolen last year) – it will render the device useless to a thief.

What was my dog's birthday again?

For the EOS R5 mk II and R1 updates, there are several other meaningful upgrades such as auto-flicker detect, the ability to set the number of shots captured in pre-continuous shooting mode and exposure simulation with flash.

Another very welcome addition is the ability to update software directly via wifi – instead of the traditional way of having to download the software, extract it to a memory card, then update in camera.

Could this be the beginning of the transition for our cameras to have the ability to function more like a phone – with the capability to directly upload images to social media or group chat? We're not asking to be able to answer phone calls on our cameras here. But of course, unfortunately this is unlikely (though not impossible) as cameras don't run on Android or Apple iOS software.

At the time of writing, apart from Canon, only Nikon allows firmware updates (via Nikon Imaging Cloud) directly via wifi.

Below, you'll find details on each camera's update, along with links to the relevant firmware.

Canon EOS R5 Mark II – firmware v1.1.1

Although Canon released the V1.1.0 update earlier this week, it was found to have an issue where video could not be recorded correctly when using a memory card larger than 2TB with the [Pre-recording] setting enabled.

So within the week, Canon updated the firmware to V1.1.1 to address this issue.
