Amidst the rumours of the R5MkII being released in April (we'll believe it when we see it), it's nice to see that the original R5 is still getting some new firmware love.

The two headlining updates are the compatibility with the video-centric FR 24-105mm f/2.8 IS USM Z lens and it's Power Zoom Adapter; as well as the ability to use CFexpress cards larger than 2TB.

The official enhancements as below

Firmware Version 2.0.0 incorporates the following enhancements and fixes:
1. Enables servo zooming to be remotely controlled from EOS Utility or Camera Connect when Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E2/PZ-E2B is attached to a compatible lens.
2. Enables up to 2 TB to be used on CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB.
3. Fixes an issue that may cause the camera, in rare instances, to experience a delayed restart after the camera has gone into Auto Power Off.
4. Fixes an issue that, under specific circumstances, may prevent the image from being displayed in the viewfinder or on the screen causing the camera to stop operating, or Error Code 70 may be displayed.
5. Fixes – minor issues.

New mirrorless, shutterless cameras on the horizon?

There have been persistent rumors circulating for some time now suggesting that the Canon R5 Mark II, alongside the Canon R1, will see their release coinciding with the Paris Olympics, which commence on July 26, 2024.

As the current R5 and R3 are already very capable cameras, it may take some serious spec bumps from the new cameras to get people to upgrade.

One of the current trends with the latest-gen cameras is to lose the mechanical shutter. This advancement offers several significant advantages, including higher flash sync, more frames per second, entirely silent shooting, and prolonged camera lifespan due to the absence of mechanical shutter wear.

According to Canon Rumours website, apparently this is the latest laundry list of what to expect for the Canon R5MkII

  • 45mp BSI CMOS Stacked Image Sensor
  • 3.2″ OLED articulating screen
  • New DIGIC Processor
  • No mechanical shutter
  • Max burst 60fps
  • New AI autofocus features
  • 8K RAW
  • 4K @ 120fps
  • Canon Log 1, 2 & 3

And as for the long awaited and eagerly anticipated Canon R1, could this be the camera to end all cameras?

Canon EOS R1 specifications (Rumoured)

  • High-speed autofocus and exposure enhanced by AI recognition
  • Moving object trajectory prediction, high success rate smart object lock focus tracking
  • 30MP full-frame stacked dual-gain sensor
  • Purely electronic rolling shutter faster than any mechanical rolling shutter
  • 1/1,250 sec flash sync time
  • (<0.8 microsecond read time)
  • Added 1:3 lossy compression CRAW (compared to lossless compression)
  • Unlimited 40fps (1:2 CRAW) / 60fps (1:3 CRAW) continuous shooting
  • Up to 120fps full-featured continuous shooting
  • Supports 240fps burst continuous shooting mode
  • 1 second pre-shooting
  • Enhanced dynamic range, better than EOS R3 and EOS R5
  • Supports two benchmarks of 16-bit DGO-RAW photo shooting
  • In-camera depth of field stack RAW
  • 6.7K 60p & 4.2K 120p (APS-C) 12-bit Cinema RAW Light recording
  • Full-frame/APS-C DCI/UHD 4K 120p C-Log2 & C-Log3 video recording
  • Sleek body optimized for maximum hand feel

So for Canon shooters, maybe it's time to start saving for the next-gen cameras.

The interesting thing to note is that the original R5 was release nearly 4 years ago, which technology wise, is quite a long time ago. It really is hard to gauge whether or not the cameras will be released before or after July at the moment – we'll just have to wait with bated breath.
