Australia’s newest pro photography organisation

In the wake of the demise of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography a number of organisations have sprung up to fill the void and support Australian photographers. One such organisation is Image Makers Association Australia (IMAA). It aims to represents Australian professional and emerging photographers through education and industry connection.

Launched in June 2022, it has over 70 paid Founding Members, the majority coming from an architectural background. As such, the initial focus will be on issues facing photographers working in that segment of the market. However, as the organisation grows and develops, it will broaden its focus to represent commercial photography more broadly. Given the significant different issues involved, it will not cater to those working in the private/domestic market, namely wedding and portrait photographers.

The IMAA’s committee members, all practising commercial photographers, include Dianna Snape (President), Brett Boardman (Vice President), Shannon McGrath (Treasurer), and Jack Lovel (Secretary).

A representative from the association stated: “With the recent collapse of representation for our industry, it seems there is a general need for resources and mentoring, not to mention community among photographers. Image Makers Association Australia is a new organisation. It does not replace previous organisations, rather will continue to build on the important work they have done. We remain connected to many of their contributors and feel an open dialogue on past learnings and achievements will serve us all best moving forward. We now need to respond to a dramatically changed business landscape along with new issues that may arise. We are here to support our membership and are open to hear how we can best do that.”
