The images depict the bedrooms of forty soldiers who were killed in Iraq or Afghanistan - the equivalent of a single platoon - from the United States, Canada, England, France, Germany, Italy and Scotland. In them, we see patriotism, youth, aspiration, individuality, markers of lives, cut short. A moving essay by Gilbertson describes his encounters with the families who have preserved these private memorials, and shares what he has learned from them about war and loss.
