Paris Photo Los Angeles

Held annually each Spring at the Paramount Pictures Studio is Paris Photo Los Angeles, the US edition of one of the world’s most celebrated art fairs for works created in the photographic medium. This year, only one Australian gallery, Black Eye Gallery, in Sydney, features. The work of gallery director, Tom Evangelidis, was accepted and those attending will be able to view images from his Façade series. The exposure for the gallery will be tremendous and highlights the great work they continue to do bringing important and significant bodies of photographic work to the general public. Along with Evangelidis will be fellow Australian photographer Murray Fredericks whose work appears courtesy of a prominent UK gallery.

Not just a bunch of pretty pictures in one place, the event presents historical and contemporary bodies of works, cutting-edge solo shows as well as book projects by renowned and emerging artists. This year, Paris Photo Los Angeles features 80 international exhibitors from 17 countries, and runs from 1-3 May, 2015.
About Façade

Evangelidis’ body of work, Façade, documents an eclectic mix of architectural eras from the Gothic beauty of the 13th century to the ornate decadence of the 18th century and the austere classicism of the Communist era in the 20th century. The photographs were shot in Prague, Bucharest, Hanoi, St Petersburg, Sofia, Istanbul and Havana. Although the cities tell their own tales of turmoil and change, for Evangelidis, the precise location of each photograph is incidental, while he dodges clichéd settings that might belong on a postcard. The body of work was shot using traditional methods, and Evangelidis used a custom-made, wooden, large-format camera and only a single sheet of film per location.
