Heartland is a commemorative photographic book of 200 photographs celebrating fifty years of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), Australia’s oldest and largest national environmental group. The images capture nature across the continent and people interacting with it in a myriad of ways: from a farmer’s relationship to the land to nature play for children, from surfing a wave to rafting a river, from birdlife on an urban balcony to the deep connection between Indigenous peoples and country. All photographs are original works by documentary photographers from the MAPgroup. Heartland also features written excepts from classic Australian writers including Patrick White, Gillian Mears, Les Murray, Alexis Wright, Favel Parrett, amongst others.

About MAPgroup

MAPgroup is a non-profit association of approximately forty photographers who share a passion for, and commitment to, high quality, independent documentary photography. Their members range from emerging photographers to well-established and experienced professionals, many of whom are recipients of national and international awards. They use our various backgrounds and individual perspectives to explore diverse subjects. Through their photographs, they tell stories that might not otherwise be told by the mainstream media.

About the Australian Conservation Foundation

The Australian Conservation Foundation is Australia’s major national environment group, beginning in 1965, and is funded almost entirely from individual donations. ACF works to protect the trees, land, water and air all Australians need for a good life. ACF exists for all the people who love the smell of rain on thirsty earth, who know the feeling of sand between their toes, who love Australia’s unique places and wildlife – and who want to keep these things safe and healthy for the future. From the Franklin to the Kimberley to Kakadu, ACF has been protecting and restoring nature in Australia for 50 years. ACF helped put the Great Barrier Reef and the Murray-Darling on the national agenda. ACF got together with farmers to create Landcare. ACF is not an exclusive club. Anyone who loves nature and wants a healthy future for Australia is welcome to join.
