Sony FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G lens

The release of the latest lens from Sony, the FE PZ 16-35mm f/4 G, brings the total number of native E-mount lenses to 66. The compact lens is a great choice for compact bodies and has been designed with both photographers and videographers in mind. The wide-angle zoom promises high performance autofocus and superior operability.

The new lens is the world’s lightest full-frame wide-angle power-zoom lens with a constant f/4 aperture, and the design has the overall barrel length constant while focusing and zooming. It tips the scales at just 353 grams, which is approximately 30% less than the SEL1635Z.

In terms of build, the FE PZ 16-35mm includes two AA (advanced aspherical) elements, a standard aspherical element, one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion), one ED glass element, and one ED aspherical element. Chromatic and spherical aberration are simultaneously controlled, while the use of AA elements helps ensure superior close-up performance throughout the zoom range. Minimum focusing distance is 0.28 meters at 16mm and 0.24 meters at 35mm. Lens coating helps suppress flare and ghosting.

AF performance is boosted with the use of six of Sony’s original XD (extreme dynamic) Linear Motors for both focus and zoom drive to provide fast response along with smooth and quiet operation.

The lens’ zoom lever with variable zoom speed makes it easy to execute super-slow constant speed and the power zoom minimises camera shake that can occur when operating a zoom ring. Buttons and controls on compatible bodies or accessories can also be used to remotely control zoom.

A dust and moisture resistant design along with a fluorine front element coating are other welcome features.

The lens will be available for early May and has a RRP of $1,999.
