JOSEPH SARKODIE

WINNER

Joseph K. Sarkodie documents true life with honesty, artistry and a sense of adventure. Sarkodie’s passion for creative expression began with a love of drawing, and led to a career in architecture. Photography was a creative outlet that soon became an all-consuming hobby, and later his full-time occupation. Sarkodie works in a friendly and unobtrusive manner, creating a relaxed environment in which to capture unguarded emotion and sincere interaction.

JUDGES’ COMMENT

“Many of the entries were distracted by the use of filters. Instead, photographers should pay attention to the context and work very hard to develop a personal vision that stays true to oneself.”

“Remember you’re a wedding photographer, not a photojournalist, as many like to claim. Photojournalism is a small part of the day and not an excuse to be lazy!”

“Make sure there is a connection between your eye and your finger, and take a photo when it’s useable. Ask: ‘Will my clients use this?’ Is the framing and composition right, and is there emotion in the shot (do they look bored or happy?). If the former, then tell them to smile. Control the day more, shoot it clean and don’t aim to fix it later.”

LUCY SPARTALIS

RUNNER-UP

Born in Adelaide, Lucy Spartalis studied at the Centre for Creative Photography before moving to Melbourne in 2009. Now based in Collingwood, Spartalis’ work regularly takes her around Australia and overseas.
Influenced by photographic artists such as Erwin Olaf, Annie Leibovitz and Elliot Erwitt, her style involves both fine art and photojournalistic techniques, enabling her to create boldly composed portraits alongside honest documentation of real life. She forms half of the duo, ‘She Takes Pictures He Makes Films’, a collaboration with filmmaker, Alastair Innes.
