The Australian Institute of Professional Photography’s (AIPP) annual national awards, the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) have recently concluded. Landscape photographer Matt Palmer, who’s based in Tasmania, has been named as the Australian Professional Photographer of the Year. He also won the Landscape category.

A passionate environmentalis, his four images all showed the footprint of humans on the planet, reflected in climate change and other impacts on the natural environment.“Three of the photographs are specifically of fire damage and regeneration from the 2019 Tasmanian fire season which saw 3.5% of the entire state burned by fire, including vital habitat and pristine forests," he said. During his acceptance speech, Palmer noted how he had found a group of inspiring photographers to call colleagues as well as friends within the AIPP.
