David Lindesay, The Contemporary Adonis (Portrait (2019))

My work explores the 2000-year continuation of the Classical ideal of the male form, as originally depicted in sculpture. It presents a perspective on the Classical allusions in contemporary Western society's portrayal of idealised masculinity, while exploring the boundaries of the idea of the portrait. I produce each work using a single strip of medium format film that is scanned and presented without post production manipulation; each of the 15 carefully composed and curated poses in each work is reproduced in shooting sequence. My composite images capture more aspects of the subject than is possible in a single image, presenting the person as both idealised and flawed, static and captured in the act of movement, singular and part of a more complex whole.
