CLARA DAVIES, KAMCHATKA'S WILD BEARS (Travel (2018))

On the remote Kamchatka Peninsula in Far East Russia lies Kurile Lake; a freshwater reserve in a long extinct volcanic caldera. It is one of Europe's largest locations of salmon spawning; during spawning sock-eyed salmon numbers range from from 2 to 6 million. And where there is salmon, there are bears. Around 1,000 bears flock to the shores of Kurile Lake during spawning season and feast on the abundance of fish. To watch these bears fishing, feasting and fighting, and resting in between, is truly a spectacular natural event.
