Secrets of top photography assistants (workshop)

Learn the secrets of top photography assistants and spend an evening with two master photographers – Peter Collie and Richard Weinstein, both of whom were once assistants. Discover what it takes to be a sought after crew member who is at the top of many photographer’s list.

The evening will consist of discussion, demonstration, tips and observations acquired from years of working in the industry. Participants will get course recognition and be put on a preferred suppliers list.

Peter Collie and Richard Weinstein are successful commercial photographers working in Sydney. Being a photographer’s assistant is seen as one of the best ways to break into the business, make contacts, and fully understand the job and how the industry works. Over the years, they noticed that although many people have trained well to be photographers themselves, very few knew what to do to be a good assistant.

This workshop is set up as a fast-track to help you be the most in-demand assistant, with repeat bookings. It is part hands-on technical explanation of equipment and workflows and also about the etiquette and dos and don’ts of a shooting day. On completion, you will feel confident in any shooting situation and be able to adapt to the technical demands and different personal preferences of different photographers and clients.

Topics covered include:

  • How to approach photographers
  • The role of the assistant
  • What to bring - the essential assistant’s kit
  • How to behave on set and with clients
  • Best practice on set, from arrival to wrap
  • Techniques and software you need to know
  • How to charge, and how much
  • Your pathway to becoming professional
