Jacqueline Bawtree, Symbiotic Fish Hatchery - Northern Bangladesh (Doco/Photojournalism (2019))

The Symbiotic Fish Hatchery is a social enterprise tucked away in Northern Bangladesh just five kilometres from the Indian Border near the town of Haluaghat. Established in 2003 with Australian support, the primary fish bred here are Tilapia (a native fish to Africa) and some local fish. Harvesting of the eggs from the adult female fish occurs regularly. They are then carefully hatched in trays in the hatchery, before being released into a separate pond to grow. Once they reach a certain size, the fingerlings are sold on to local farmers for their own fish ponds to eventually sell as food in the local community.
